Gorilla Knit

Today I found a video called Gorilla Knitting on youtube. Made me chuckle. I politely corrected them. Or perhaps is it me who is wrong? Who knows.

Guerilla underground shenanigans

So we met up with GlasgowPicKnitters at Kibble Palace in the west end of Glasgow with my yarnbombers. After a few hours of stitching and chatting, we heading to the underground for a stitch up storm and we got BUSTED by the underground officials! What an exciting result!!!
What a fun day ;)

The night before, we followed Nightknitpixie around as the yarnbomber put her pieces up around Glasgows west end and city centre....

Caught! Nightknitpixie caught on camera!

Guerilla night action

Happening all over Glasgow these past days. Captured on film, even in the crazy weather...
I am too, Woohoo!

These poles were knit up on rainy Thursday. We almost blew over but the knits survived the storm! Oh aren't they fabulous.

A little bump

Sometimes, it's hard to find the time, mental space, inspiration...

Other days, you feel as high as the sky. You are going to make a kick-ass-show.

I tend to get easily pushed either way depending on the people I meet and don't meet.
My knitters are wonderful. Some times I find it really hard to get through to knitters. Perhaps they are shy. This is fine, I don't like being in front of the camera either. But I also encourage anonymous style filming. Do it. Contact me.

India was fantastic but no yarnbombers found there- as hard as I looked! There are however some gorgeous silks to be bought and so I did.

I'm heading back to Australia for December/January. Will catch up with me knitters there and see how the subculture has exploded.

A name... what is in a name.

I've been thinking alot about what name to give my film. I have until know referred to it as "A Knitted Convenience" which was simply because this whole project was initially inspired after a day of filming a knit up of a toilet. I don't really feel like this title connects anymore since my film is now reaching the global community. I need a title that describes everyone and paints a picture of the stitch community.

I have a few little ideas for a title, but I thought I'd put it out there; if you have a great name for this documentary, please email it to yarnbombing@hotmail.com and you will for sure be credited if I chose your title. Of course, there are a few suggestions already, so in the case that your title suggestion is the same as mine or another person- it's a first come first served process, as I'll credit the first person to suggest the name that is chosen.

Since this is a community project, it would be really great to have some input!

I have this urge to.... dance a little.

Ravelry at a PicKnit in Glasgow

Some filming in Glasgow's botanical gardens involved chatting to Ravelry creators Jessica and Casey. The park was filled with knitters, crochet lovers, and loads of CAKE! A cake was even baked for Jessica and Casey with the Ravelry logo! Either way, a gorgeous sunny day with some wonderful people. More info about Glasgow PicKnits can be found at http://glasgowpicknitters.posterous.com/

I'm still here!

I've had a month off. What started as a weekend away for my birthday, ended up being a month of non stop fun and games. Oh well, I shall not feel too guilty!

So I'm currently planning away.
I'm planning a trip to the USA and Canada in September to do the rest of my filming before I start editing in the winter months.

Therefore, this is a shout out for all of my graffiti artists to send me an email now as I design my itinerary!!! Exciting stuff!

I might add that I'm also heading to Bangalore in October so if there are any Indian artists out there -get in touch!

Peace out

La Bastellerie in Berlin

As promised, here are the fun action photos taken whilst filming at the knit evening held at La Bastellerie.

Monday, June 7, 2010

Berlin was a Blast!

Firstly, I went to the knit evening at La BasteLLerie where I was welcomed by a gorgeous group of knitters, crochet masters, and a variety of stitch artists. Had a wonderful time in Berlin with some fabulous knitter/crochet/yarn bomber locals! (Photos coming soon!)

Then on Saturday the 5th on June, I went to a knitting party like no other.

Organized by the girls of Stricken Bar who are actually the Berlin group of CFT, who are connected to the lovely Soléne from Paris interviewed earlier this month. Oryanne and Emmanuelle organised an event of knitting and crochet crafts which involved teaching, drinking, sun bathing, socialising and just having a great time. A perfect afternoon it was on the terasse of stricken bar. Knitters have to be the coolest people on earth. Once I completed my filming, I joined them with a cocktail and my newest crochet project until sunset, and ahhh what a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon in Berlin.

Definitely a memorable afternoon which put a smile to my face :)

Where to next....

WHO'S YOUR GRANNY!?

DOES YOUR GRANNY KNIT?
I'm looking to interview traditional knitters. Your grandmother, your mother, your brother.

If you live in the United Kingdom, please contact me for an interview.

No need to be a yarn bomber (but if your granny is a yarn bomber, that is super cool)

No need to be as cute as this photo (she can't be real!)

Knitting/crochet skills essential!

Getting the UK BuZzzzzzZ!

Here I am, arrived in wonderful Scotland... but where are the knitters? I've heard about them, I've seen the pictures, I've read the hype, but where are they hiding? It's time to sneak out of your castles and put away your masks and contact me for a stitch of laughter!
(How corny is that?)
On a serious note, as serious as this topic can be, send me an email if you know someone or are someone who likes to stitch up public space. I'll travel anywhere and if you are elsewhere in the UK please contact me as I'm organising my route for the summer to come and film you.

Early June I'm travelling to Berlin, stay tuned!

Tempting the Evil in Paris

Ahh the wonderful knits of Soléne, a very talented knitter remain on the tree for such a short amount of time... it's such a shame...but another great day filming, in Paris!
Soléne is part of a group called the Collectif France Tricot. They are formed of knitters in Paris and Berlin...
Poor little Soléne had a bit of trouble knitting the higher end of the snake and the passers by were too afraid to assist. I guess they were worried about getting put in jail for knitting up a tree. I guess it's pretty illegal. Imagine a criminal record for knitting up a tree, it would be pretty difficult to get that job as a prime minister... dammit!

so I guess next up is a trip to Berlin! Hook me up :)

My wonderful friend...

This is a weird time for me... one of my closest of friends has just passed away. This friend, Brad, is also the brain that inspired and helped me develop this documentary. He's been chatting with me for months getting excited about this project. His unexpected passing has torn me into pieces.. however I have now decided to dedicate this project for him. This is for you Bradley, a true friend and a shining star always. My heart bleeds at the thought of not seeing you again but I also know you are somewhere better. Until we meet again, I will use every creative bone in my body in a way that will make you proud.

by the way,

Anyone know who did this? I photographed this in Amsterdam during my current trip; a great yarn bomb... but it was taken down the next day. Such a shame, I thought it was pretty fabulous.

Amsterdam Shenanigans

So let's start by saying, " I Heart Amsterdam".
But lets also conclude with the fact that Amsterdam weather doesn't always heart me.
Had a couple of nice interviews in Amsterdam with some wonderful knitters, crocheters, lovers of graffiti knit, as well as the not so loving it...
It rained bucket loads the entire day, but there was no stopping us now!
Our guerilla knitter stays anonymous only known by her street art seen at http://www.ladiesfancyworksociety.com/

Streets of Tel Aviv

Ready to film the streets of Tel Aviv today as I meet the lovely Shirily and find out the dramas of Yarm Bombing in Israel. Stay tuned :)

2 more sleeps until the adventure begins!

I've got all my equipment ready, and now I just need to pack.
I've failed at my first attempt to start packing. Hopefully I'll get my things into a backpack in time.
I'm wondering if I should risk sneaking my crochet hook onto the plane. I'm not sure how it is with their obstruction of security measures. Those crochet hooks are pretty dangerous, but I'm making a flower how dangerous can I really be?

Catch you on the road!

Who's Next!?

So I'm really happy with my fabulous knitters Grrl & Dog and Veronica Darling and now I'm busy talk to many knitters about my next shoots.
I feel like maybe this shouldn't be a girl wit ha crappy camera because my camera is actually pretty good. I've also just purchased my own awesome radio mic so I'm READY! Funding so far has been a bit of a struggle. I'll be heading over to Scotland in early May where I'll be working at BBC (super YAY) so perhaps I'll have another opportunity to pitch there maybe?. WHO KNOWS? (Can you even imagine if BBC bought my story? I think I would lose bladder control).
Enough of hypothetical scenarios, My next interview will be in Tel-Aviv Israel in April, Stay tuned.

I've just put a segment together that I shot at Bendigo Woollen Mills... this is also where I buy my wool and meeting the staff made me love them even more. The clip is pretty dam good but I think that if I give away too much there might not be enough surprises. Please note, the clips I put on the blog are teasers only. They are not the final program, there are plenty of surprises.

Don't forget, if you hate this, please let me know because I want to know!

Teasing you with a short clip

Spending an afternoon with Veronica Darling.
Please note, these are only teasers, not the entire story!

Guerilla knitter in Amsterdam?

As I'm just about to leave for my world tour of shooting for the knitting documentary, I find the challenge getting excitingly harder. Thanks to the wonderful people who are helping me and the internet of course, I'm getting connected with knitters all around the world.

I'm currently looking for knitters in Amsterdam who are into stitching the streets. Please email me if you have any connections or are interested in having a say.

I'm also looking for people who hate guerilla knitting. I want to know why, tell me why please!!!

Guerilla knitter interview

I recently met up with Veronica Darling and she was a ball.
Check out her knits in Enmore Sydney at Wilford street/Lane corner of Enmore road.
Veronica Darling inspired me with her ideology towards life through the craft. I look forwards to putting her story together.
